Pre-requisite: Overseas Medical Qualification and an Advanced level of English (entry test required)

There may be funded places available for tertiary qualified migrants who fit the criteria for a TEC study grant.*


This part-time course consists of 120 hours class time with self-study tasks.

It is designed to assist overseas trained Medical Professionals (anyone in the Health Profession), improve their language skills so that they can enter the New Zealand medical workforce or strengthen their language skills in their profession. It focuses on verbal interaction in particular.

Using authentic taped, videoed and written material, course content includes:

  • Understanding "lay" medical terminology and patient talk
  • Managing an appropriate dialogue between patient and health-care provider
  • Reading and extracting information from texts relevant to the medical workplace
  • Taking notes from oral and written texts
  • Writing referral letters
  • Using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical forms
  • Pronunciation

This course assists students to prepare for the Occupational English Test (OET) and offers IELTS preparation strategies

Selection Process

As there is a selection process for this course, please do not pay your fee at the time of application. Short-listed applicants will be asked to complete an addendum student profile form plus provide curriculum vitae and supporting documentation (eg. Academic transcripts, references).
Students will be advised of acceptance on to this course. Once acceptance has been confirmed, a fees invoice will be sent to you requesting immediate payment.
